Sustainable Agriculture!
In the last fifty years, agriculture has changed dramatically die to the implementation of new technologies, the specialization of crops and the use of agrochemicals. Although this industrialization in agriculture achieved positive effects such as increased productivity, it has had high costs. The degradation and erosion of soils, increased water pollution and reduced biodiversity have threatened not only the environment but the quality of life for people in those areas.
Sustainable agriculture offers an alternative. instead of focusing solely on increased production, sustainable agriculture seeks and environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable way to produce, meeting the needs of the present without compromising those of future generations.
The Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) is a coalition of independent conservation organizations working with farmers to achieve the goals of sustainable agriculture and the Rainforest Alliance certification seal.
Through the Sustainable Agriculture Standard, the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) defines the necessary criteria to achieve social and environmental sustainability in agricultural production. The Sustainable Agriculture Standard consists of ten principals:
Social and Environmental Management System
Ecosystem Conservation
Wildlife Protection
Water Conservation
Fair Treatment and Good Working Conditions for Workers
Occupational Health and Safety
Community Relations
Integrated Crop Management
Soil Management and Conservation
Integrated Waste Management
Each of these principles is composed of criteria, some of which are critical criteria. Meeting 80% of all criteria and 100% of critical criteria is essential for achieving and maintaining certification. in this way, the gradual fulfillment of the Standard leads the farm or group closer to sustainability.
